New York Post, New York Daily News, and amNY metro Front Pages Today
Hall Monitors
— NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch is promising a crackdown on officer misconduct with a new, tougher disciplinary system. She claims this will increase accountability within the department. It's unclear how this new system will differ from previous policies or if it will satisfy critics calling for more police oversight. (The City)
— The Trump Justice Department reportedly issued a criminal subpoena to a Manhattan hotel, demanding a list of all migrants staying there. According to The Guardian, the subpoena also sought the names of any NYC government officials connected to the hotel. What exactly they're investigating remains to be seen. (NY Daily News)
— Supporters of Mahmoud Khalil rallied outside Manhattan Federal Court as civil rights lawyers fought his immigration detention. Advocates are pleading his case, but it is complicated by the fact that he has not been charged with any crime. (The City)
Capitol Gains
— Trump's "border czar" Tom Homan doubled down on immigration enforcement during a visit to the NY Capitol. He vowed to increase security along the northern border and deport more undocumented migrants, boasting, "Hate on me, because I eat it up." Homan also warned that obstructing federal agents would lead to more agents in local communities. (Times Union)
— Gov. Hochul's facing serious heat after barring fired corrections officers from future state jobs. Lawmakers are blasting the move as an abuse of power and "vindictive" retaliation for a strike that sought safer prison conditions. Republican Rep. Langworthy went a step further, calling it a "callous and petty retribution". (myTwinTiers)
— Trump's SALT cuts are back on the table. The current $10,000 limit has been a point of contention, especially for lawmakers from high-tax states, and Trump himself has waffled on the issue. It currently looks likely that raising the cap slightly, for example to $20,000, will be the winning plan as any further reduction could make the budget unworkable. (CNBC)
Trail Mix
— State Sen. Kevin Parker is throwing his hat in the ring for NYC Comptroller, promising to make the city's finances reflect New Yorkers' values. Parker, who's reentering the race after a previous run in 2021, says he'll focus on affordable housing and using pension funds to build workforce and senior residences. He'll face off against Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine and Brooklyn Councilman Justin Brannan in the Democratic primary as Brad Lander vies for mayor. (NY1)
— Looks like the smart money isn't on Mayor Adams getting re-elected. He's plummeted to sixth place on some betting sites for the Democratic nomination, with gamblers favoring Andrew Cuomo by a landslide. While Adams lags behind other contenders like Zohran Mamdani and Brad Lander, Cuomo is still the clear frontrunner. (SILive.com)
— Andrew Cuomo is continuing his comeback in his old neighborhood. Queens Democratic Assembly Members Stacy Pheffer Amato, Vivian Cook, and Sam Berger are backing the former governor in the 2025 NYC mayoral race, citing his focus on crime and support for the Jewish community. (amNY)
