Hall Monitors

Things got heated at Tuesday's anti-ICE protest in Lower Manhattan, resulting in over 80 arrests. Thousands of demonstrators flooded the streets near City Hall to protest ICE deportations, clashing with the NYPD. A level three mobilization was ordered as some demonstrators hurled objects at police, while others were pepper-sprayed during arrest. (NY Post)

New zoning and tax incentives in NYC are spurring growth in storefronts and apartments. The Dept. of City Planning reportedly estimates that 500 vacant storefronts reopened because of the new regulations, where they otherwise would have been abandoned. REBNY has also increased their estimates on office conversions, from 20k new apartments to 40k. (The City)

Great news for NYC renters: a ban on broker fees is set to kick in this Wednesday. A federal judge gave the green light, rejecting a last-ditch effort by real estate groups to block the law, which could save renters thousands upfront. While landlords worry about potentially higher rents down the line, supporters say nixing those huge upfront fees will make moving far easier, particularly for lower-income New Yorkers. (Gothamist)

Capitol Gains

New York colleges will soon have to designate a Title VI Coordinator, thanks to a new bill passed by Queens lawmakers Rozic and Stavisky. The legislation aims to combat rising antisemitism and discrimination on campuses by enforcing civil rights protections and addressing related complaints. With the bill headed to Governor Hochul's desk, Jewish advocacy groups are celebrating it as a crucial step toward creating a safer environment for students. (QNS)

Albany traffic got a whole lot slower Tuesday thanks to immigration rights activists. Despite the roadblocks and vocal protests, the NY For All Act, designed to limit cooperation between state/local agencies and ICE is struggling to gain traction in the Legislature. With the legislative session nearing its end, passage of the bill looks increasingly unlikely. (State of Politics)

Gov. Hochul is heading to Congress to defend New York's sanctuary policies before a House committee. Expect questions about a 2017 order shielding immigrants' data and how the state's handling the migrant crisis, especially the cost to taxpayers is adding fuel to the fire. While the state insists on limiting cooperation with federal immigration enforcement, recent incidents raise questions, like the state troopers that are sometimes calling in federal agents anyway when criminal activity is suspected. Trail Mix

Andrew Cuomo's campaign just got a major boost, with former Mayor Mike Bloomberg endorsing him for NYC mayor. Bloomberg praised Cuomo's management experience and know-how, signaling concerns about democratic socialist candidate Zohran Mamdani. This endorsement could sway moderate and Jewish Democrats, as well as voters focused on the city's management. (NY Post)

Andrew Cuomo is racking up endorsements from New York City's Orthodox Jewish community in his bid for mayor. Despite past tensions over COVID restrictions, many are backing Cuomo due to concerns about Mamdani’s stance on Israel. He recently got the backing of: the Flatbush Jewish Community Coalition, the Sephardic Community Federation, Bobov community leaders, two Jewish groups in Crown Heights, the stronghold of the Chabad Hasidic community, and the Far Rockaway Jewish Alliance. (Times of Israel)

Socialist mayoral hopeful Zohran Mamdani is facing attack ads from a newly formed super PAC, Sensible City, Inc. Backed by finance, law, and communications execs, the PAC is throwing shade at Mamdani's pro-Palestinian stance and past support for defunding the police. Mamdani's camp dismisses the ads as a desperate move by wealthy elites trying to protect their wallets, while the PAC’s donors aim to thwart Mamdani's left-wing agenda. (NY Daily News)
