Hall Monitors
— ICE just swept through NYC, arresting 206 illegal migrants, including gang members and sex offenders. According to ICE, some of those arrested had previously been released due to sanctuary city laws preventing local authorities from cooperating with federal immigration enforcement. The feds say those arrested include members of Tren de Aragua, MS-13, Sureños, and the 18th Street gangs. (NY Post)
— Adolfo Carrión Jr. is diving into the deep end as NYC's new deputy mayor for housing, economic development, and workforce. Despite stepping into the role amidst high-profile resignations and uncertainty surrounding Mayor Adams' future, Carrión aims to maintain stability and advance the city's ambitious housing goals. He's focused on keeping the city affordable, creating jobs, and ensuring the city remains a magnet for tourism and global investment. (City & State)
— NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch is blasting DA Darcel Clark for being too soft on crime, particularly car thefts, claiming the Bronx is the best place to steal a car because of lenient charges. While citywide car thefts are down, the Bronx is seeing an increase, prompting Tisch to call for felony charges for auto theft. The Bronx DA's office responded, saying charging decisions are made with integrity based on available evidence. (NY Post)
Capitol Gains
— Speaker Heastie thinks he's sealed a deal with district attorneys to tweak the state's discovery laws, but Gov. Hochul isn't so sure and she still wants changes. At the heart of the debate is whether prosecutors should only be required to turn over "relevant" evidence, versus the current standard of "related" information. Despite Heastie claiming the DAs are on board and his team briefed the Governor, Hochul held an event to rally support for her plan. (State of Politics)
— Donald Trump's allies are going after NY AG Letitia James, who oversaw the recent trial against the Trump Organization. A federal referral alleges James falsified records on mortgage applications for properties in Virginia and Brooklyn, including misrepresenting her primary residence and marital status. James' office claims it's a politically motivated attack meant to intimidate her. (NY Post)
— Trump's tariffs on Chinese goods could throw a wrench in NYC's plan to install energy-saving window heat pumps in public housing. NYCHA is counting on Chinese company Midea to supply thousands of these units. If tariffs cause Midea's prices to double, it could seriously impact the cash-strapped housing authority's efforts to reduce emissions. (NYS Focus)

Trail Mix
— Andrew Cuomo's mayoral campaign just hit a snag. Despite being the front-runner, he was denied $2.5 million in matching funds due to a paperwork error blamed on faulty fundraising software. While his team scrambled to fix the issue, the snafu undermines his claim of being the most competent candidate, though his campaign insists it's not a major financial blow. (Politico)
— THANKFULLY FOR CUOMO: A new Siena/AARP poll shows him far in the lead: with 34% first round vote to Mamdani’s 16%. Cuomo ends up winning before it even becomes a 2 person race, earning 54% of the vote in the 8th round, beating out Mamdani at 27% and Lander at 19%. (amNY)
— AOC is having a moment, raking in a whopping $9.6 million in the first quarter of 2025. She and Bernie Sanders are barnstorming the country, blasting Trump and billionaires like Elon Musk at packed "Fighting Oligarchy" rallies. The fundraising haul comes amid whispers of a potential primary challenge to Chuck Schumer. (CNBC)
— NEW MARIST POLLING CONFIRMS THIS TOO: Schumer’s polling continues to drop, opening a lane for AOC’s potential primary challenge. Just 34% think he is doing a good or better job. Meanwhile a shocking 54% of New Yorkers believe he should step down as Minority Leader. That includes 48% of Democrats… (Marist)
